The Gateway reported on a recent review in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, which debunks the alleged rumors that aspartame is related to a variety of health problems. The article notes, "While countless Internet sites have long warned of the dangers of the artificial sweetener aspartame, a recent study suggests that the substance is safe. The study, published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, reviewed 55 studies of the artificial sweetener to assess the link between aspartame and brain tumours, seizures and the effect on blood-sugar control. It found no evidence of a direct connection."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five artificial sweeteners that are reportedly safe to consume daily over a lifetime. In order for an artificial sweetener to be FDA approved, it must be tested for safety. Although numerous studies have been conducted on artificial sweeteners and their relation to cancer, research has found no evidence to support such a link in humans.
